Emblazoned

Have been listening recently to Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and James Morrison, wondering whether all the best love songs have already been written. Is there a love song already out there on a shelf, ready to be picked out for any occasion? How many different ways can you tell someone how you feel? I consider myself pretty picky about love songs I like as it has to have the delicate balance of sincerity and substance to make me pay attention. There are many who try but few who just instinctively know what you have to hear right then and there in the moment.  Not that I always know what to say either but here’s my humble attempt:

Emblazoned

Resist but my name will escape your lips

Fight the urge to boldly reach your fingertips

Coming just close enough to explore and slowly slip

With the utmost respect, not hastily stripped

Taking eternity to enjoy every scar, the curve of each hip

My image, emblazoned in your mind

Pretending your thoughts aren’t clouded, rendering you blind

Memorizing the common ground and spark contrast, souls aligned

Arriving at the conclusion, you love my enigmatic and contradictory kind

Hands on clocks spin, no one cares, leaving everything else behind

Blissful entanglement, still not sure what belongs to whom

Cloaked messily, wrapped in cotton, silk and fleece like a womb

Stubble prickling smooth skin, oblivious to the morning foggy gloom

Avoiding the day’s commitments as long as possible but reality looms

Phones start to ring, e-mails waiting for needless answers, duty must resume

Awkwardness reappears, struggling for perfect words to say, syllables forming

Without a spotlight and stranger admiration, have trouble performing

Getting caught up in the future bad possibilities, cautious doubt swarming

Outside opinions beginning to influence, dimming the glow, conforming

Excruciating memories of past emotional battles lost, emerge storming

But one look deep into eyes, pushes the superfluous external drama aside

Tears cried for the unworthy prior no longer matter, we both deeply sigh

Obstacles will always return but fall away again, cynical voices subside

In a crowd, only you and I exist, walking together silently in stride

Fate accepted, unexplainably to each other we are guided
